Oooh, I forgot about the Recurse center! While they have a very different model than we do (much of their collaboration is in person for example) it was really interesting to read and really think about their social rules, and how they can be more welcoming in that situation. https://www.recurse.com/social-rules In terms of Outreachy, it feels like we need someone to writeup the details that would make it easy for a PMC to figure out how to work with Outreachy - explaining the concepts, suggesting ways to make their schedule fit with typical Apache project methods, etc. > Outreachy is especially noteworthy, as they've measurably increased > diverse contribution to the Linux kernel in a way that was accepted by > that (notoriously reactionary) community. Reading the past years of Linux kernel reports, it was amazing to see that Outreachy interns showed up in a very measurable way there. That's impressive both compared to the historical norms in the past kernel culture (unwelcoming to many people in general), and compared to the fact that Outreachy committers showed up as a block of contributions vis-a-vis the major corporations too. > My slides, an audio recording, and a full talk transcript are online, > and I'll keep linking them until people get sick of it: > > > https://speakerdeck.com/wohali/building-and-sustaining-inclusive-communities > > https://feathercast.apache.org/2018/09/29/building-and-sustaining-inclusive-communities-joan-touzet/ > https://wohali.dreamwidth.org/55736.html > > The flipside to the Outreachy story is that the Linux kernel community > could be, well, more welcoming.
