>* How would you define "openwashing"?

Using the term "open" or "open source" as a catch phrase in order to get
publicity and funding for a actually purely commercial product.

>* What examples of openwashing come to your mind (e.g. from your country,
>professional network)?

Auterion. The ETHZ startup has meanwhile a multi-million $ deal with wallmart.
The continously advert their product as open-source. What actually happened is
that part of the PX4 development team re-grouped into this company. The started
from their former open-source codes did further development but without
contributing back. That holds for the PX4 firmware and QGroundControl software
at least. The PX4 hardware was open just in v1 but v2 until latest (v6) are not
open. What they publish are just "standards" on connectors etc. and
requirements the be compatible and get support.

>* Have you experienced openwashing in your project, organisation, or
>environment? How does it affect you and how do you deal with it?

This PX4 story is not satisfying. Especially as the platform is advertised ad
THE goto solution for university research. But the was in the old days luckily
one (!) alternative with very similar features that is open ecists: ardupilot.

>* Are you aware of cases where companies have won public tenders by
>openwashing? What did they do and what happened?

Cannot say whether this was a relevant point.

>* Do you see openwashing as a major problem for Free Software and the Free
>Software community? If so, why?

It is abusing intentionsvand work of others. Actually is stealing from the
public. Furthermore by not sticking to the rules you get an advantage over
others and an additional benefit.

>* What would you suggest to face openwashing?

Make it public.
May be consitute an nonprofit organization containing lawers and try to enforce
the open-source licences/"contracts".

>* Do you have anything else you would like to share on the topic of
>openwashing?

Personally I think this is just cheap and as said stealing. The same methods as
dollar imperialism just not in far away but our own countries.

Ursin
