Sorry it took me so long to answer, I was @home sick.
With ethtool it works and I don't get kernel panic anymore. Performance is not
yet an issue since I'm still learning these things.
Jesse, if you need a feedback I will apply your patch to my 0.99.1
nevertheless. It's a lab machine.
