For the sake of anyone else who is wondering how to accomplish all this,

It turns out that there is indeed a magic function, and that function 
has to be run by root. The best (most straightforward) answer was here

I'm relieved to see that it's simple. Now all I have to do is hold my 
breath, shut my eyes, spin around three times, and Voila! It'll all be over.
