Brandon,
I think part of the Nievete (I can't spell that -- uninformed I guess is
a better word). I think that some of the training kids get today lacks
in some of the life skills we received in school. But part of growing up
is learning by example.  Animals just kick their young out of the nest,
learn to fly or hit the dirt. 

As for being unethical that is another issue that could fill up another
thread.

Even when I was new to this kind of stuff (not *quite* as old as you) I
knew
to clarify ownership issues beforehand, in writing.  (This has resulted
in
several go-rounds before I would sign.)  By default, without anything in
writing, his work belongs to the school.

That said, if he hasn't been compensated, the school is being unethical.
 If
he has any written records that can be used to prove his claim, he can
start
by billing them and potentially end in small claims court.  (If he
doesn't,
he can still invoice them but his options are pretty much limited to
that.)
