It depends entirely on the quantity of logs you're trying to analyze. Splunk is primarily IO-bound but depending on your configuration it can peg your processors nicely to boot. I wouldn't recommend running Splunk in a virtualized environment for anything other than integration testing or else if you are processing the lightest of loads.
