We're also a small shop and big brother free edition is working well for me, with LARRD for statistics. We're not keeping any complex metrics, just basic stats. It's working with our Solaris, Linux and Windows servers, there are a bunch of add-ins at deadcat, and it's easy to add custom checks. Plus, nice simple blinky-light page for boss/helpdesk :-)
I'm actually running a fairly old version because it "ain't broke".
