And it was such a good story!  I don't think this was what I read,
though.  There was nothing about religion associated with this memory.

I was probably thinking of this:
"...  In 1897 the Indiana House of Representatives unanimously passed a
measure redefining the area of a circle and the value of pi.  ..."

and may have been influenced by this [but I WAS thinking of Indiana]:
"...  In his 1961 novel <I>Stranger in a Strange Land</I>, Robert
Heinlein makes passing mention of Tennessee's enacting a law making pi
equal 3.0"

Back then I was not QUITE as critical of what I was reading ...
