I seem to recall that most digital camera sensors detect IR, UV, and visible light. I have pointed IR remotes at digital cameras and saw the beam blinking on the camera display. You MIGHT be able to change the filters on a cheap digital camera to block visible/UV and have an IR camera. Justa thought.
