I had a similar problem on ubuntu. I worked around it by using musescore, which turns out to be better for my purposes anyway. But timidity seems to be working now. I could probably figure out the date of it not working and look at what has updated since then if you think it would help. When you look at the keyboard, all the notes are there already. But if you mean a note enough, it will sound different. You got to pick the notes you really mean!
