When I plug in one of my external backup disks my desktop software,
Mate (gnome fork from before they ruined the UI), helpful asks me for
the passphrase, which I like, I don't need to type fussy commands.
This dialog has three options:
- Forget password immediately
- Remember password until you logout
- Remember forever
The until logout is the default choice. Anyone know how to change the
default?
Why? I don't want "helpful" software here and there storing sensitive
passphrases for me at all, I want it forgotten immediately. I consider
that second option dangerous and the third option very dangerous. I
know, I know, I am always declining a little convenience in exchange
for a lot less security…
I fixed it, I used a hammer, but I fixed it:
# mv /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon /usr/bin/hide-gnome-keyring-daemon
The questions are still there, but unless I click the "forget" option
the encrypted volume won't mount. When I login some complaints about not
being able to start gnome-keyring-daemon appear in syslog, but no
apparent ill affects.
FYI.
-kb, the Kent who doesn't want his passwords being automatically saved
for him in various "helpful" places (Linux computer, web browsers, …),
he wants them stored only where he stores them.
