The window is docked and docked windows do not have an "x" to close. You
can see the same with the task pane, with the page pane, with the slide
pane, or with the "styles and formatting" window. If you undock the
gallery, it will have an "x" in the title bar to close the gallery.
Most of the other tool bars,
windows etc. have an " x " in the right hand corner to exit that
particular area whereas the Gallery window has no " x " in the right
hand corner.
Mmh, I know no docked toolbar with "x". Which one do you refer to?

Yes you are right. One looses sight that it is a docked window when it
appears as a tool window as well. If you click through all of the tools,
Gallery is the only tool where there is no exit button. Maybe it should
then be treated in the same way?
