just in case, I removed the only .pyc file I found under
/usr/share/gnuradio/modtool/templates/gr-newmod/python/__pycache
/usr/share/gnuradio/modtool/templates/gr-newmod/python/__pycache__$   sudo
rm *pyc
The same error occurs.
