Monaural broadcast FM is much less sensitive to both multi-path effects,
and low-level on-channel RFI that stereo. You're in a building
presumably with at least some kind of not-entirely-rf-permeable skin,
and likely lots of other electronic equipment producing RF noise.
That's not ideal for a radio receiver.
