However, since I can't find the example you referring to just now, I'd guess that since for BER measurement you need to know the input bits, data is not generated by a random source but by a vector source. A vector sources just stores a vector of data and outputs it. The attached flowgraph does neither compare input to output nor does it count errors, so that's something you might want to address first. Then: using the error rate block seems to make sense to me. Please detail on where you get the item size mismatch (the blocks and the sizes), most probably it's easier to help you there, instead of helping you build a BER measurement system from scratch.
