One possible explanation is that on this version, CLOCK MONOTONIC has a different monotonic count per thread. given that the tick count is also pretty small, I suspect this is the case. But not on the more recent versions of ubuntu. :-) I will have to do a little more research. But its safe to comment out the asserts.
