Yes, you'll squelch the "no signal" channels going into the transponder, but that is only the difference between the received Tsys over the filter bandwidth and the inherent noise power of the transmitter itself.
It may not work to actually improve power efficiency, but another goal is to just make it sound better by not raising the background level across the whole output spectrum where there is no signal present. By the time you add 40 or 50 dB gain at baseband, the amplified noise at the transmitter is pretty noticeable.
This is all just an experiment to see what can be done, and to learn some GRC in the process. :-)
