It was the ethernet card. Just a suggestion but it might be nice to add this to the debugging network problems section of UHD-USRP2 Application Notes. Thank you very much Josh!
Specifically I found uhd_find_devices and uhd_usrp_probe --args <device-specific-address-args> to be useful next steps after pinging the usrp2s to find them.
