It is a disk error and to prevent more damage to the filesystem, the

No,No,No! if it is failing, badblocks could push it over the edge. Do
'skdump /dev/sdc' or whatever your  external device is at. This should
report the diagnostic data from the disk controller. Look for reallocated
sectors and current pending sectors. If you are inquisitive you can run
firmware tests 'smartctl -t short /dev/sdc' (or -t long), and wait the
reported number of minutes and do skdump or smartctl -a again.

The warranties on disks are fairly long, so if the SMART status reports
failure you may be eligible for a replacement.
