Rolf-Werner,

Over the past 25+ years I've had good experiences with WD drives. The
company does seem to do some capacities better than others, and vendors have
warned me away from the ones that tend to die early. The WD 80G drive I took
out of service a week or so ago has been running for about 6 years; the 160G
drive that will be replaced this weekend has been running faithfully for
about 4 years.

I believe that all drive manufacturers have some capacities or
technologies that do not hold up well. And because I no longer pay attention
to general hardware issues I no longer know how many actual manufacturers
remain despite the variety of brands available.
