Hi Craig,
the package DirectFB-extra-1.0.0 works on top of DirectFB-1.0.x.
It provides the following:
bmp, imlib2, pnm, svg, ffmpeg and several other video formats.
Note you need appropriate additional libraries in most cases.
See if this works for you.
