Hello everyone,

For those who don't know me I've been involved with open source hacking
and HTPC like software for about 6 years and mostly involved with Freevo.

It's been a dream of mine for quite a while to find a decent,
reproducable platform for my developments. I prefer the set-top-box
form factor over the louder, more moving parts, less industrial home
theatre PC. Right now my prototype / development STB is just an Epia
M10000 in a Morex 2699 case. It's not really an STB but kind of looks
like one. :)

I am just an independent hacker, and don't work for an OEM or any other
company who would provide a unit for development. But first, I want to
find just the right platform, and then figure out how to get it.

A lot of developers on this list are into embedded systems and STB
development. The platform I choose must work with DirectFB because after
about 6 years of hacking in this realm I think it's the best choice for
my project(s). So, I need your help! I need to see what hardware is
out there (and will continue to be), what has enough power and linux &
DirectFB support. High definition video output would be a nice to have
as well.

What I am aware of (SoC):
 - TI Davinci
 - Geode
 - Freescale
 - ST Micro
 - Intel SoCs like the CE2110 / XScale

Most of these are not that powerful but given the right support for
hardware accelerated graphics and video overlays it's not a huge issue.
I do like the CE2110 since it has those things and also runs at about 1
GHz.

I have read about the Tribbox, a ST7109 based system, but the hardware
is a bit too closed for my liking.

Also, I have seen the systems from GCT Global / Allwell, but the good
hardware doesn't seem to have DirectFB support (ie: VIA CX700M) or is
outdated (TVI CyberPro 5005).

What else is out there? What are you using for reference designs?

Thanks for any input,
-Rob
