Er, no it's not.  I tried changing directory to my ~/diagrams
directory and running dia from the command line there.  Dia still
defaulted to my home directory, *not* ~/diagrams.

Yes, but if you go to open files in the 'tools' window it's back at
the root/home directory.  It's only if you open a file in the window
where a file is already open that you get the same directory.

How do you do that?  I thought it must be possible but I couldn't work
out how to do it.  It would be an acceptable solution for me.
