The only layer in my diagram is the background. See attached screenshot. I did try adding a new layer and then adding an object on that layer to see if that would help. I cannot delete the object itself on the new layer but can delete the layer itself, which in turn deletes the object. Press ctrl-L to get the layer dialog. You must highlight the layer of the item you wish to edit. If the wrong layer is current, you cannot get to it.
