As a fall back you can group the rectangles and place them in a repository
Dia.  Then you can copy and paste the grouped shapes between Dia just as
you can within a Dia.

Of course you miss out on having them neatly organized in a
sheet/palette as you would have by converting them to shapes and making
sheets
