In other gnome applications I had trouble due to gconf.

If you are using gnome under X windows.  Try the following.

1.  Logoff from your X lgin

2.  Login to a text terminal.

3.  Logout

4.  Login via X

I don't think I had to do anything gross such as

   mv ~/.gconf ~/gconf-save

   work in single user mode
