Visio would be a good place to look for inspiration. I don't have Visio, but I happen to be using a free (as in beer) CAD program, IntelliCAD, right now. It uses this space to display the state of Grid, Snap, and other settings. Double clicking toggles on/off states and brings up a dialog for layer, etc. This would be useful functionality in Dia.
