FWIW I have hit similar problems on at least Ubuntu 20.04 most recently. To avoid the problem I follow the instruction on what I think is the official repo release page:
https://android.googlesource.com/tools/repo Specifically: $ mkdir -p ~/.bin $ PATH="${HOME}/.bin:${PATH}" $ curl https://storage.googleapis.com/git-repo-downloads/repo > ~/.bin/repo $ chmod a+rx ~/.bin/repo The apt installed version does not work (for me) on at least Ubuntu 20.04.
