Yeah, *BSD are weird.  tell me how you do it, and I'll add that
as well.

You don't say exactly how it fails, but one thing to be aware of is that if the symlink already exists, that command may fail, even if it's a benign replacement. The workaround is to us the '-f' option. E.g.:

        ln -sf /usr/bin/python3 /usr/bin/python
