BSD-4-Clause-UC is the original version of the license. It was propagated by the BSD family of Unix variants and came into wide use because of that. Over time, the Board of Regents has gradually removed clauses and now recommends BSD-2-Clause. It's not considered controversial to move from BSD-4-Clause-UC to one of the more recent variants approved by the Board of Regents.
