My admonition some time ago that this is more complicated than you seemed to think? In a strange way I'm relieved it blows up so quickly, though. You would really need to set up a testing rig that can show what the effects really are if you start to go after it piecemeal. There are probably code paths that dither the measurements multiple times, which is not necessary; and other code paths that cargo-culted dithering from someplace else that wouldn't need it at all, but that takes experimentation to figure out.
