Yeah, 'various'.  More than I can keep track of.  But the command line
level is pretty straightforward and easy to use, once you get a feel
for it.

It is great to have the flexibility of system level, user level,
session level and package level configurability.  Sometimes there
is a package you HAVE to use that requires some odd ball version of
something and Gentoo allows that, without penalizing the rest of the
system.

Gentoo also uses symlinks for a lot.  Usually for very basic system
level things like 32bit or 64 bit: /usr/lib used to be a link to
/usr/lib32 or /usr/lib64.
