At least with timers used in QML via view->rootContext()->setContextProperty() 
they seem to stop even faster than QML Timers.

I guess I have to implement something like libiphb as rainisto mentioned in 
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1401321&postcount=4

Just seems like overkill for such a simple app.
