UNIX's primary goal was ease (and understandability) of implementation, 
even at the expense of performance or capability.

GNU's Not Unix -- And, I might add, Linux isn't GNU.

"Complexity" has nothing to do with openness or controllability.  Those 
exist on different axes, so please stop conflating them.
