In 2006 mcelog has very useful to me because shows up that was an hardware problem and mcelog reports just happens when something is going really bad, like message says "hardware problem" software can't fix it. These problems should be reported upstream , reading the bug reports, cpu throttling and very hot computer could be an acpi problem , so http://vger.kernel.org/vger-lists.html#linux-acpi is where you could find some answers.
