It would need to be a test suite that is supposed to (and ready to) be run
at build-time. There are projects, which include a "tests" subdir, which
only contains files that may be built and executed manually. Sometimes the
test programs only print results without returning an error return code
on error condition.

Most interesting/relevant would be existing targets in Makefiles,
which really run test-suites.
