It's the first option. Both freetype and freetype-freeworld now include the 
bytecode interpreter, which is indeed no longer patented (so the blog post 
is incorrect when it claims the bytecode interpreter is only in freetype-
freeworld!), but subpixel rendering is still patented and thus only 
available in freetype-freeworld.
