Cool, thanks for the input. There's little risk of it becoming optional on
the desktop, because a large number of desktop packages sensibly have it as
a requirement -- including gnome-shell and kde-runtime. (Xfce doesn't seem 
to have anything that directly requires it except for xfce4-power-manager, 
but other collatoral deps lead back to xfce-session.)

I'm going to build some images without it and can start filing bugs on
anything that comes up.
