(again, in theory) there is (or could be) the rescue
image with it's own firmware that was known to
work (at least at some point).

However, as others have noted, the rescue image
may have it's own issue(s), especially if it was
generated years ago.  FWIW, I would prefer
to see the rescue image force regenerated at each
Fedora release update (after boot has been shown
to be successful), but that is a different kettle of
worms (and I don't want to open it today).
