Isn't simpledrm supposed to fix that? I've experimented with that on my Lenovo laptop with an amdgpu, and a UKI without any firmware nor kernel driver boots, displays the rich plymouth screen and transitions to the amdgpu driver when switching to the rootfs just fine. I had some problems at the beginning, but they were due to the fact that the amdgpu kmod was included in the initrd, so it was autoloaded, and it barfed because the fw was missing.
