Is upsetream in this case referring to openMW or bullet physics? I am in contact with openMW's debian packager, as well as a few members of their team, so I can forward any questions you have if necessary/get you in contact.

I checked the notes on openmw. It seems to be a Debian-only patch, and upstream 
is worryingly unresponsive to PRs. Their cmake Config file is also completely 
broken, but probably fixed in Debian. Imo it would be better to have a single 
version and I am not sure if the double precision operations would have 
significant performance impact on modern hardware. I would also be in favor of 
using bundled version in this case as well (openmw case particularly), unless 
upstream can respond to contributions (I can help write that part and review 
some of their open CMake PRs).

What's your opinion on upstream state Rich?
