I agree. I'm also having trouble with side-tags, and even after carefully following the documentation, I feel like something is still missing. The last time I tried, I couldn't see the build, so I ended up redoing everything without using side-tags (fortunately, my packages don't have many dependencies).
I'm volunteer to review and improve the documentation, after mastering the site-tag process.
