Right, and that's the only other way to convey this information to the 
bootloader. And that's one of the reasons why in sd-boot we use the filename of 
the UKI to do boot counting, rather than an NV var. There's really nothing else 
that can be used on an average UEFI system - either NV storage or ESP.
