I agree that having a template like linux-XXXX that could be substituted
in would be useful and I think we should probably do that for all variants
that will stick with the existing fallback hostname today. Maybe in a followup
change proposal?

I don't think that fixes all concerns that are embedded in this proposal, 
though.
