I made a test build of kicad, and it works perfectly using your

would need to move to wxGTK in lockstep with wxPython 4.1.x, correct?
Correct. I used wxGTK (not wxGTK3) along with your python3-wxpython4 package.
The resulting KiCad build worked perfectly.
