I looked into this a little bit, and it appears that the primary concern is cross-site scripting attacks, not a legal separation. See https://developer.github.com/changes/2014-04-25-user-content-security/ I am not a lawyer, but it's my understanding that having a different domain name doesn't actually provide any particularly strong legal shield.
