Aligning as much as possible with what appears
to be the industry consensus ("main") makes sense
to me, as I will be able to (re)train my finger muscle
memory in the fedora name space to type "main".
While there is no technical reason every domain
cannot select different primary branch names,
and sometimes that does make sense, "main" is
sufficiently generic that to me it makes it a rational
default to avoid needing domain specific knowledge.
