Not directly relatived but:

I think Gwyn is working on updating grpc but as far as I understand there is an (upstream) bug which prevents grpc from compiling. The issue has been raised upstream but with little progress as far as I can tell.

Probably the best course of action would be to bundle the problematic git submodules yourself.
