Boiling it down with a LOT of hyperbole, I would say: Debian has usually taken a 'perl' approach to a problem: It doesn't matter how something is accomplished, as long as it's accomplished. Red Hat Linux -> Fedora has usually taken a 'python' approach to a problem: There should be one opinionated way to do things and only when all else fails (java) allow for alternatives. The Debian approach allows for the system administrator to have more selection in their tools but can lead to 'why in the world is this not working' as a user if you move from one systems administrator to another The Red Hat/Fedora approach allows the user to have a smoother existence of moving from place to place, but tends to have sysadmins having to put in more work-arounds.
