When you say 'bootstrap', which setting do you mean exactly? I don't
see one that's just called 'bootstrap', I see --(no-)bootstrap-chroot
and --(no-|use-)bootstrap-image .

I tried with --no-bootstrap-chroot and it still seems slow to me.
